The Nintendo Switch is a very popular console, and it has some solid first-party and third-party AAA releases coming its way in the future.
BY Whitney Meers PUBLISHED Jul 03, 2023

The Nintendo Switch has proven to be an incredibly popular console with a wide range of available titles. Whether players are looking for unique indie gems, Nintendo's massive IP, or remasters of some of their favorite older games, the Switch likely has a couple of games available for everyone. While there are still many games that players are hoping to see announced for the console, like a more expansive virtual console, Nintendo has made great efforts to support the Switch with a lineup of great games.

Many games released on the system have been genre-defining, like Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey, but Nintendo still has a lot more planned for the Switch, including some massive AAA games and titles from other studios. Whether players are looking forward to some great mini-games or a JRPG, Nintendo has them covered with these in-development AAA Switch games.

Updated July 3, 2023 by Mark Sammut: Tears of the Kingdom might be in the rearview mirror, but the future still holds quite a few Triple-A Nintendo Switch games.

Pikmin 4

It has been a long time coming, but Pikmin 4 officially has a release date. The first proper home console sequel since 2013's third entry, the upcoming Switch game looks set to tweak the franchise's formula rather than re-invent it. That said, Pikmin 4 will include a few new mechanics and changes, so veterans can look forward to an evolution rather than just a continuation. Visually, the project looks impressive so far, and it could easily prove to be among the most gorgeous games on the Switch. Pikmin 4 will also support co-op multiplayer.

Samba de Amigo: Party Central

A rhythm game developed and published by Sega, Samba de Amigo: Party Central will be coming to the Nintendo Switch alongside the Meta Quest 2 and Pro. As the music and gameplay revolve around maracas, Samba de Amigo is a great match for the console's Joy-Cons. Along with a mode that encourages players to master each song, the package also has something of a campaign that follows the eponymous character as they try to dominate the streamer space. Party Central also features co-op.

Baten Kaitos 1 & 2 HD Remaster

During the February 2023 Nintendo Direct, the publisher announced a compilation containing remasters of Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean and Baten Kaitos Origins. Originally released on the GameCube, these JRPGs are still highly-regarded to this day, even if they are not as well-known as IPs like Final Fantasy or Xenoblade Chronicles. Combined, these games should offer more than 100 hours of content, and that is if someone focuses almost exclusively on the main quests.

Mortal Kombat 1

Considering NetherRealm has not announced PS4 and Xbox One versions, Mortal Kombat 1's impending Switch debut is rather surprising. Launching a new timeline, the gory fighting game will feature alternative iterations of popular characters like Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Mileena. Although hardly the only addition, Mortal Kombat 1's most eye-catching new mechanic is Kameo Fighters, which allows a unique roster of fighters to lend a helping hand during matches.

Detective Pikachu Returns

2016's Detective Pikachu was and still is one of Pokemon's more adventurous spin-offs. Revolving around a talkative Pikachu who investigates cases alongside his human partner Tim Goodman, the game has a lighthearted tone, endearing characters, and easy-going gameplay. The sequel, Detective Pikachu Returns, appears to be cut from the same cloth, and the Nintendo Direct trailer primarily highlighted Pikachu's voice acting and the improved visuals.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Remasters and spin-offs notwithstanding, the Nintendo Switch does not have a classic 2D Mario game; however, that is set to change with Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Set within the Flower Kingdom, Nintendo's platformer takes the franchise's traditional gameplay and adds a few lively twists courtesy of power-ups such as the Wonder Flower. Wonder supports up to 4-player co-op and features six playable characters, including Princess Peach and Daisy. Announced for October 20, 2023, Super Mario Bros. Wonder looks set to be Nintendo's big release for the year's holiday season.

WarioWare: Move It!

The second WarioWare game created for the Nintendo Switch, Move It! will come packed with hundreds of microgames. For the uninitiated, these are basically minigames designed to be completed very quickly, which tends to make WarioWare a good option for party settings. Move It! appears to focus on the Joy-Con's motion controls, and the game will allow four players to compete against each other.

Hogwarts Legacy has dominated the gaming landscape since its February 2023 release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is also in development for last-gen systems and the Nintendo Switch, with the latter set to be the last version to debut. Considering Avalanche's title is a reasonably big and beautiful open-world game, the fact a Switch port is in development is surprising. Only a handful of modern AAA third-party projects try to fit Nintendo's console into their development, and Hogwarts Legacy will almost certainly need to make some serious concessions to fit on the hybrid system.

Super Mario RPG

Announced out of nowhere during the June 2023 Nintendo Direct, the SNES' Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is being revamped for a modern audience. The franchise's first foray into RPG territory is generally hailed as a classic and holds up well considering it launched in 1996. Obviously, the remake features brand-new visuals that look stunning, at least from the available footage; however, it is not clear whether the remake will change up the core gameplay loop.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince

The second Dragon Quest spin-off set for a 2023 release, The Dark Prince will be the first proper entry in the Monsters subseries since 2016's Joker 3, which was never released in Western nations. Similar to its predecessors, The Dark Prince is a monster-catching game that not only enables players to collect all sorts of iconic DQ creatures but also allows them to fuse two together. The combat system is turn-based, although it is a bit more hands-off than the mainline entries since players essentially manage rather than directly control their teams.

Boasting a vibrant art style and paying homage to the franchise's Genesis releases that are still considered masterpieces, Sonic Superstars could be the return to basics the license needs following the polarizing Sonic Forces and Sonic Frontiers.

After skipping the 2010s, Ubisoft's Prince of Persia is finally set to make its long-awaited comeback in the form of The Lost Crown. A side-scroller, the action-adventure game combines fast-paced action, tight platforming, and gorgeous visuals to hopefully create an experience that can stand alongside The Sands of Time. Unlike the previous 3D entries, the upcoming game features a new protagonist called Sargon, who seems to be quite a departure from the fan-favorite Prince.

One of the many games revealed at the June 2023 Nintendo Direct, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is getting remastered for the Switch. Despite being more divisive than the GameCube classic and Luigi's Mansion 3, the 3DS original is still great by most metrics, and it was among its console's crowning achievements. The project's teaser did not really reveal the scope of the changes, and there is a chance that only a graphical upgrade will be included.

Metroid Prime 4 was announced by Nintendo what feels like ages ago. However, the company has confirmed that the game is still happening, so fans simply have to be patient.

Rumored: Mario Kart 9

The Switch does already have Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but it has been long enough since that game's release that rumors have begun circulating about a Mario Kart 9. A sequel will undoubtedly happen, as the series is a popular staple of Nintendo's IP, so fans will just have to see how long it takes to become a reality. In the February 2022 Direct, Nintendo announced the Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, suggesting that a sequel still has a long way to go (if it is even in development).
